I’ve made championship belts in Sialkot, Pakistan, since 2002, so I look at a WBC belt the way a maker does. I check the plates, the lettering, the weight and the strap.
This guide shows what the green and gold belt looked like in each era and how many WBC belts exist. It also covers how a fighter earns one, what it costs to win and keep it, and how to pick a good WBC replica belt.
Key Takeaways
- There is more than one WBC belt. The world title sits beside the Silver, Diamond, interim, Franchise, Eternal and Emeritus titles, plus one-off commemorative belts.
- A fighter wins the belt in a WBC-sanctioned title fight. The champion then pays a sanctioning fee, typically about 3% of the purse.
- No standard price exists for a real belt. I found none published, but Muhammad Ali’s 1974 title belt sold for $6.18 million at auction.
- A good WBC replica belt is heavy, deeply etched or cast, and set with glass stones. Ours start at $184.
Table of Contents
What Does the WBC World Champion Belt Look Like?
The WBC world champion belt is the green and gold belt that every weight class fights for. The design is identical from flyweight to heavyweight. The WBC formed in 1963 in Mexico City, and its own timeline lists six belt generations.
Six Generations of the WBC Boxing Championship Belt
The WBC published this timeline in February 2026. I’ve condensed it and added the champions it links to each generation. A “ceramic” is a small ceramic piece set into the plates, and the WBC uses them to honor people.
| Generation | What changed | Champions the WBC links to it |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Silver plate on a black velvet sash | Muhammad Ali, George Foreman, Jose Napoles, Carlos Canto |
| 2 | In 1976, the first Adidas Original belt. It set the green and gold look. | Larry Holmes, Sugar Ray Leonard, Carlos Zarate, Alexis Arguello |
| 3 | Two rows of flags, gold medals of Ali and Joe Louis, and small metal chains | Julio Cesar Chavez, Mike Tyson, Ricardo Lopez |
| 4 | In 2000, three lines of flags (165 countries) and four ceramics | Floyd Mayweather, Manny Pacquiao, Juan Manuel Marquez |
| 5 | Three ceramics per side. Sulaiman, Mayweather and the current champion sit on the right. Two division legends and Ali sit on the left. | Not listed |
| 6 | Flags of all UN members plus Puerto Rico, the Vatican and Palestine, with gold details | Not listed |
The 1976 belt is the turning point. WBC president Jose Sulaiman designed it with Piero Pini. As a maker, I read every later version as a layout puzzle: how many flags, chains and ceramics fit around the center.
Auction house Goldin notes that older belts are generic, with no fighter named on them. Newer generations carry the current champion’s ceramic.
How Big and Heavy Is a Real WBC Belt?
No single size exists, because dimensions and weight change by era. Here are three belts as auction houses list them.
- Era not stated: Lelands lists a central brass plate of 7.5 by 8.5 inches.
- Larry Holmes belt: listed at 44 inches long and 2 pounds, on green leather.
- Holmes belt, 1982: listed at about 45 inches and 3.5 pounds, with diamonds and rubies.
Those are three listings, not a factory standard, and I couldn’t find a size the WBC publishes. They put a real belt between 2 and 3.5 pounds, or about 0.9 to 1.6 kilograms. I’ll compare that with our replica’s weight later in this guide.
Is There Only One WBC Belt?
No. The WBC gives out a world title in every weight class, and it also awards interim, Silver, Diamond, Franchise, Eternal and Emeritus titles. The world title is the main belt, but several others carry the WBC name.
World, Interim, Silver and Diamond Belts
These four are the ones fans see most. The Silver and Diamond rules below come from the WBC’s Wikipedia entry and a Boxing Scene report.
| Belt | What it is | Checkable detail |
|---|---|---|
| World | The main title in each weight class | The belt looks the same in every division |
| Interim | Held while the regular champion is out or the title is vacant | The WBC doesn’t promote it automatically when the regular belt is vacated, and it decides how to fill the vacancy. |
| Silver | A step below the world title | Created in 2010 to replace interim titles. The holder doesn’t inherit a vacated world title. The first winner was Justin Savi on April 16, 2010. |
| Diamond | An honorary belt for historic fights | Created in September 2009. The first went to Manny Pacquiao on November 14, 2009. Defending it isn’t mandatory. |
Franchise, Eternal and Emeritus Titles
These three are status titles, not belts a fighter wins in a normal bout. The WBC gives them for who a boxer is, not for one night in the ring.
- Franchise: a special status for a current world champion who is also an elite boxer. A two-thirds vote of the Board of Governors grants it, and Canelo Alvarez was the first.
- Eternal: for a retired boxer who was never beaten for the title and made solid defenses. Vitali Klitschko became the Eternal heavyweight champion in 2016.
- Emeritus: lifetime recognition, voted by two-thirds of the Board of Governors. The WBC named Andre Ward Champion Emeritus in 2013 when he lost his WBC title.
Regional bodies such as the NABF, the OPBF and the EBU award their own belts too. Those are separate from the WBC world title.
Commemorative Belts, From the $1,000,000 Emerald to the Money Belt
The WBC has also made dozens of one-off commemorative belts. They mark a fight, not a title.
- The Emerald belt: the WBC unveiled a $1,000,000 belt for Floyd Mayweather vs Manny Pacquiao on May 2, 2015. Guinness World Records lists it as the most expensive boxing championship belt.
- The Money Belt: the WBC made it for Mayweather vs Conor McGregor in 2017, a fight with no WBC title at stake.
How Do You Get a WBC Belt?
You win a WBC-sanctioned title fight. After the final bell, a WBC representative presents the belt in the ring. The win is the way in.
Winning a lesser title doesn’t hand you the main one. An interim or Silver champion can’t automatically take over a vacated world title. When the regular belt is vacant, the WBC decides how to fill it.
The belt that goes home with the winner isn’t always the real one. When Melvin Jerusalem won the WBC strawweight title in March 2024, he arrived in Manila holding a replica.
His promoter told the Daily Tribune, “We borrowed it from another former WBC champion.” Even a brand-new world champion can fly home with a stand-in.
How Much Does a Real WBC Belt Cost?
I found no published price for a real WBC belt. Every figure I found came from a one-off commission or an auction. The price comes from the history, not the metal.
| Belt | Price | What it tells you |
|---|---|---|
| Emerald belt, 2015 | $1,000,000 | The WBC’s own figure for a commemorative belt, not a title belt |
| Muhammad Ali’s WBC belt from 1974 | $6.18 million | Sold at Heritage Auctions |
The materials don’t explain numbers like these. Lelands lists the center plate of its belt as brass. A Holmes belt listing calls its center plate gold-colored, not solid gold.
So if you’re asking whether a real WBC belt is real gold, the listings I found say no. Most auction value comes from who held the belt, and when.
How Much Does It Cost to Keep the WBC Belt?
Keeping the belt costs a sanctioning fee, which is typically about 3% of the champion’s purse. On a $10 million purse, that’s about $300,000. Champions who refuse to pay can lose the belt.
What Is the Sanctioning Fee?
A sanctioning fee is what a champion pays a boxing body for approving and officiating a title fight. Here is what I found for the WBC.
- The rate: typically 3% of the fighter’s purse, according to the WBC’s statements on Crawford.
- What it pays for: WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman says the fees cover judges, referees and ringside doctors.
- Terence Crawford, 2025: the WBC said it cut his fee to 0.6% of a reported $50 million purse, about $300,000. It stripped him of the title in early December 2025, after he beat Canelo Alvarez on September 13 and didn’t pay. The WBC said 75% of the fee would go to its José Sulaimán Boxers Fund.
- Miguel Cotto, 2015: the WBC stripped him after he refused a $300,000 fee. He had offered $150,000 on a reported $10 million purse.
- The WBO, for comparison: it stripped Floyd Mayweather in 2015 for missing a $200,000 fee deadline.
Do the Fees Make the Green Belt Worth Less?
Some fighters think so. Cotto’s view was that the money mattered more to him than a title that didn’t carry much weight.
I see it the other way. A belt that costs real money to hold has to mean something, and that meaning is a big part of why people want a good replica.
Can You Buy a WBC Belt? What’s Actually for Sale
Yes, but not the belt a champion wins in the ring. Search “WBC belt for sale” and you’ll find three kinds of listings: real belts at auction, official WBC-branded products, and replicas. The price gap between them is huge, so it’s worth knowing which one you’re looking at.
Real belts reach buyers through auction houses such as Lelands, Goldin and Heritage. Goldin has listed Cotto’s stripped 2015 WBC belt, for example.
Official Merchandise vs a WBC Replica Belt
I looked at what sells online today. These are the prices I saw while researching, so check them again before you buy.
| Type | Example | Price I saw |
|---|---|---|
| Official WBC product | Boxfit UK: WBC Official Championship Trouser Belt | £350.99 |
| Official WBC product | Boxfit UK: WBC Official Gold Plated Replica (sold out when I checked) | £1,998.99 |
| Marketplace replica | One new “WBC boxing belt” listing on eBay | US$139 |
| Wholesale replica | Alibaba: WBC-labeled belts, minimum orders apply | About $45 to $118 |
| Other custom belt maker | One maker I checked | From $164.99 |
| Retro Shields replica | Etched 4mm brass plates | $184 |
| Retro Shields replica | Silver mold casting | $200 |
Boxfit says genuine WBC products come with a Certificate of Authenticity. A replica doesn’t, and it shouldn’t pretend to.
Watch the listing text, too. A $119.99 Etsy listing sells a WBA replica with 4mm zinc plates but reuses WBC copy in its description. Read the plate material and the weight before you read the title.
How to Spot a Good WBC Replica Belt (and Avoid a Cheap One)
A good WBC boxing belt replica is heavy, with deep lettering and glass stones. I’ve made these belts since 2002, and those three checks catch most weak builds. For a checklist that fits any belt, read our guide on how to spot a quality championship belt replica.
Here is the short version for a WBC replica belt:
- Ask for the plate metal and thickness in millimeters.
- Check that the lettering is raised, and ask about the gold-colored finish.
- Confirm the stones are glass.
- Ask what the strap is made of and how long it is.
- Compare the weight with a real belt’s.
- Ask how the seller packs the belt, and ask for photos and video before it ships.
Plate Metal and Thickness
Thick plates give a belt its weight. Our etched belts use 4mm brass plates. Some listings use zinc plates instead, like the Etsy WBA replica above.
I wrote more about brass and zinc plates in our materials guide.
Lettering Depth and Gold Finish
Run a fingernail across the “WORLD CHAMPION” letters. On a weak belt the etching is shallow and the words aren’t raised. Flat lettering is the fastest way to spot a cheap build.
The finish on ours is gold-colored, not solid gold, like the center plates in the auction listings I cited earlier.

Glass Stones and Strap Material
Our stones are glass. We don’t use zirconia or rhinestones, and a seller should tell you which one they use.
Our strap is PU leather, which is artificial, and it runs 48 to 52 inches. Real leather holds up a bit better over many years, and PU costs less.
Weight and Size Next to the Real Thing
Weight is the quickest honest test of plate thickness. Our replica weighs 2.5 kilograms or more, about 5.5 pounds. That’s heavier than the real belts in the auction listings, so I won’t claim it matches one.
| Real WBC belt (auction listings) | Retro Shields WBC replica | |
|---|---|---|
| Weight | 2 to 3.5 lb (0.9 to 1.6 kg) | 2.5 kg or more (about 5.5 lb) |
| Strap length | 44 to 45 inches | 48 to 52 inches |
| Strap material | Green leather | PU (artificial) leather |
| Center plate | Brass, 7.5 by 8.5 inches in one listing | 4mm brass (etched version) |
| Stones | Diamonds and rubies on one 1982 Holmes belt | Glass |

Packaging and Proof Before Shipping
Packaging matters more than most buyers expect. One customer in Austria chose a Pakistani supplier that quoted 20% less. His belt arrived with torn leather from poor packaging and scratched metal.
We send photos and video of your belt before it ships, so you see its condition first.

Etched Brass or Silver Mold Casting: Which WBC Replica Belt Should You Choose?
Choose etched brass if you can wait and want 4mm brass plates at $184. Choose silver mold casting at $200 if you need it sooner, because it takes 6 to 8 working days to make when the plates are in stock.
| Method | Price | Making time | Shipping time |
|---|---|---|---|
| Etched 4mm brass | $184 | 8 to 15 working days | 6 to 8 days |
| Silver mold casting | $200 | 6 to 8 working days, if plates are in stock | Ask us for your destination |
The $16 price gap is small, so time is the bigger difference between the two.

The hardest part of a cast belt isn’t any one piece. It’s getting the thickness from mold casting, the artificial gold, the leather and the paint to work together. When one of those is off, you see it right away in the finished belt.

WBC Belt FAQ
Are WBC Replica Belts Official or Licensed?
No. A Retro Shields WBC replica belt is an unofficial replica, not a WBC product. Official WBC products, like those at Boxfit UK, come with a Certificate of Authenticity, and a replica doesn’t have one.
How Much Does a WBC Belt Weigh?
The real belts in the auction listings weigh 2 to 3.5 pounds, or about 0.9 to 1.6 kilograms. Our WBC replica weighs 2.5 kilograms or more, about 5.5 pounds. Weight varies by era, so no single figure fits every real belt.
What Is the Difference Between a WBC Interim and World Champion?
The world champion holds the main title. An interim champion holds a temporary one, and the WBC doesn’t promote that champion automatically if the regular belt is vacated. The WBC decides how to fill the vacancy.
How Is the WBC Different From the WBA, IBF and WBO?
They are separate sanctioning bodies, and each has its own champions, rankings and fees. The WBC formed in 1963 in Mexico City, and its belt is green and gold. For a deeper look, see our post on how the IBO, WBC and WBA belts differ.
How Long Does a WBC Replica Belt Take to Make?
An etched brass belt takes 8 to 15 working days to process, plus 6 to 8 days of shipping. A silver mold-cast belt takes 6 to 8 working days to make when the plates are in stock.
